HEALTH CARE

Patch-Up South Africa Health Care Team

HIV/TB/STI

Easy Access to Healthcare Services

Our beneficiaries frequently encounter numerous obstacles in accessing healthcare, such as lack of insurance, limited resources, and social stigma. To address these challenges, we offer a range of short-term services including TB and STI screenings, HIV testing, and harm prevention initiatives. Our harm prevention efforts include health education, treatment literacy, and awareness campaigns about various illnesses and healthy living practices. We also distribute condoms and conduct health and wellness outreach programs. For those needing more advanced medical care, we provide referrals to specialized services.

In addition to these short-term efforts, we are committed to long-term solutions such as establishing a Mobile Health Care Units. These mobile clinics travel to areas with limited healthcare access, including locations where homeless individuals gather. The mobile units aim to deliver primary care, vaccinations, testing, screenings, medication dispensation, and treatment for common health issues. Through these combined short-term and long-term strategies, we aim to overcome healthcare barriers, improve health outcomes, and enhance overall wellness for marginalized communities in South Africa.

PSYCHOSOCIAL SUPPORT

Mental Health and Family Strengthening

This program focuses on supporting substance users, victims and survivors of GBVF, adolescent young vulnerable people. These groups are among the most at risk in our communities, facing significant challenges that impact their health, safety, and future prospects. Substance abuse can lead to severe health problems, social isolation, and economic instability, making it crucial to provide intervention and rehabilitation services. Gender-based violence not only causes immediate physical and emotional harm but also long-term psychological trauma and social stigma, necessitating comprehensive support for recovery and empowerment. Vulnerable young people, including those affected by these issues, require targeted assistance to ensure their development, education, and integration into society. Activities include:

One-on-one counselling

Support groups

Referrals (rehabilitation centres, hospital, shelters)

Good Hygiene and Sanitation

Maintaining good hygiene is essential for preventing health issues and promoting overall well-being within the community. Our initiative focuses on distributing clean clothes and sanitary items to address fundamental needs and improve the quality of our beneficiaries. By tackling the unique hygiene challenges faced in our communities, this project aims to enhance living conditions, overall health, and dignity while recognizing and addressing their specific needs.

Short-term activities include distributing clean clothing to help individuals maintain personal hygiene. We accept donations of both new and gently used clothing. Secondary clothing is washed and repaired before being redistributed. Additionally, we provide hygiene kits containing essentials such as soap, toothpaste, toothbrushes, sanitary products, and other personal care items. Our efforts also involve conducting awareness campaigns and providing hygiene education to inform individuals about preventing illnesses and managing personal hygiene under challenging circumstances.

For medium to long-term solutions, we plan to implement Mobile Hygiene Units as part of the Patch-Up mobile hygiene program. These units will offer mobile showers and toilets to reduce illness and prevent skin infections from worsening within homeless communities. By facilitating access to essential hygiene facilities, the project will support our homeless beneficiaries in seeking employment, housing, and other social services. The Mobile Hygiene Units will also serve as a contact point for our outreach programs, enabling service providers to offer additional support such as advanced healthcare and social assistance.
